Please familiarise yourself with the ECOZIP Kaikoura Adventure Race Rules here.
The Race
The course will be kept under wraps until registration & map handout on the Friday. Competitors must follow the course and alternatives designed by the organisers and must race within the spirit of the competition.
Upon registration teams will be provided with a map marked with checkpoints, a description of each checkpoint and will be informed as to each stage type.
Checkpoints and Transition Areas
The race will comprise of a number of checkpoints and transition areas.
Transition Areas : Teams must sign in at every transition area. This includes both registering both Navlight wrist tags and reporting to the transition marshals.
Checkpoints : Teams must record both wrist tags at each of the checkpoints on course. Failure to register both wrist tags on a Navlight control will result in no points being scored.
No GPS allowed.
Separate teams are not allowed to share checkpoint answers or work together in any way.
Timing
The clock will start at the beginning of the race.
Times will be recorded at each transition area and when the team crosses the line. When a team decides to rest at a checkpoint, the clock doesn’t stop.
Cut Offs and Alternative Courses
The organisers reserve the right to impose cut off times on sections of the race for logistic and safety reasons. These will be announced at the race briefing and noted in the competitors race instructions.
Placings and Awards
Placing is based on time. The team who completes the course the fastest will win.
Responsibility
Each competitor enters under their own responsibility. They can judge whether they should participate in the event, start and continue to the finish line. Nevertheless the organisers reserve the right to stop a competitor or team from setting off or continuing the event.
Equipment
Teams must carry all compulsory equipment as per the gear list. Failure to do so will result in a 2hr time penalty.
Jury
Any legitimate race protests will be reviewed by the race organisers. Any protest must be filed with the race organiser within one hour of finishing the race.
Withdrawal
In the case of withdrawal of a team member or the entire team during the race, the team captain must inform the organisers by any means available in the shortest possible time. Failure to do so may result in a search and rescue operation.
Teams who withdraw a team member will be classed as unranked. Unranked teams may be permitted to continue at the discretion of the organisers; however to proceed on a new stage they must have at least 2 team members remaining.
Time Penalties
These will occur for any breach of rule or regulation and littering.
Disqualification
Unfair behaviour or behaviour that brings the race into disrepute, use of unauthorised equipment and abandonment of team member during the race.
Teams will be disqualified if they break any of the road rules.
If a team member has to pull out of the race the team may continue but they will be unranked.
Safety / Security
The race will be supported by comprehensive safety back up. Radio Operators and marshals with knowledge of the course will be placed at each transitions area. These will be coordinated by a central control team that will keep a tab on the progress and whereabouts of each team.
Insurance
All participants compete at their own risk and the organisers will not accept liability for any personal accident or injury during the event. A liability waiver form must be signed by the team captain on behalf of the team. Competitors should ensure that they are adequately insured.
Consideration for the land
To enable us to run this event we have sought permission from a number of private land owners. It is important that we treat the land that we pass through with respect. To this end it is a requirement that all teams carry out their own rubbish.
Gates are to remain as they are found, if there is a green ear tag on the gate post it can be left open, if there is a red ear tag on the gate post it needs to be closed. When climbing over a gate do so by its hinges and when climbing over a fence do so by the fence post. Please do not put stock under pressure, give them plenty of space going around them or travel along a fence line.
Officials
Team members must respect instructions given by officials and must also follow their decisions regarding health, security and safety.
Support Crew
48 & 12 hour teams require a support crew this year, to drop teams at the start lines.
However, the race itself is unsupported. That means support crews are not required/permitted on course during the race. You have to do all your transitions yourself. This creates an even playing field and means you don’t have to rope in support crew to traipse around after you all day. Friends and family are of course welcome to come to cheer you on and take photos. There will be plenty of spots along to course to view the race.
Spectators please do NOT bring Dogs
